SAIWUSU

SAIWUSU

Our trip to Inner Mongolia in the fall was less seasonal and more of a bid to escape Beijing during the massive military parade of 2015 (and the Putin-induced traffic that came along with it).  After a nine hour drive we made it to Saiwusu - the home of our colleague who is currently in the process of developing a fiber production base there. Saiwusu is a Han village etched in the sea of grass covered hills that stretch to the outer edge of the horizon. The villagers raise cashmere goats - herding them out everyday to feed in the hills and back home at night. With her family's help, Weidan has brought alpaca to the village to begin breeding them and raising them for their wool. Alpaca were only introduced to China roughly seven years ago and we've speculated that these may be some of the first ones brought to Inner Mongolia.  Along with raising the Alpaca - Weidan is focusing on spinning, knitting, weaving, and natural dying (based on local plants) to innovate a new enterprise model that can help to improve the village's socio-economic status.
